We took the ferry from Dover to Calais and then it was
only an hours drive through the beautiful French countryside to our spacious
French Gite. We unpacked and settled in before heading out to spend the evening
in a favourite local restaurant.
Although the weather was very mixed it didn’t stop us
from getting out and about. On our first morning we drove to Stella Plage for
the colourful Kite Festival and then on to Audresselles for lunch at the Crab
Festival. We then spent the afternoon in the very interesting World War 2
Museum before heading back to our gite for a delicious home cooked dinner and
an evening listening to the jukebox and
playing table football and pool.
The next morning we drove to Boulogne to visit Europe’s
largest Aquarium. We spent the whole day looking at the all the amazing species
of sea creatures. We then had a stroll in the old town of Boulogne before
having dinner in one of the quaint restaurants.
Our next trip was across The Somme Estuary by steam
train from St Valery to Le Crotoy. It was a great chance to see the scenery and
wildlife of the area and the sun was shining while we had a picnic lunch by the
estuary shore in Le Crotoy. Back in St
Valery we took a walk along the promenade, did some shopping, stopped for a
drink in a cafe and of course had an ice cream! That evening we had dinner at a
restaurant in the old walled town of Montreuil.
Thursday was market day in Le Touquet so a chance for
us to sample the local produce and do some souvenir shopping. We strolled
around the town, stopped in a cafe for lunch and then it was on to the local
chocolate factory to buy some more delicious French goods. We had a home cooked
dinner followed by an evening stroll by the nearby mill. It was then back to
our gite to continue our table football and pool competition.
On our last full day we drove to the seaside town of
Hardelot. We passed many beautiful houses on our way to the Chateau where some
of us climbed the ramparts to take in the view. We had lunch in a local cafe
and returned to the chocolate factory for a tour and of course to buy more from
the shop! That evening we ate in our favourite Auberge in Hucqueliers.The food
was fantastic and the company was great!
After packing up on our last morning we had a lovely
drive through the pretty coastal villages on our way to the Port of Calais. Our
last chance to enjoy the beautiful countryside.
On the ferry we all tucked into a hearty lunch of fish
and chips to keep us going for our journeys home.
